Professor Florence Myles

Professor of Second Language Acquisition, Department of Language and Linguistics, University of Essex

Florence Myles' research is in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), especially of French and she is particularly interested in morphosyntactic development, in the role of formulaic language in SLA, in how children of different ages learn foreign languages in the classroom, and in theory-building in SLA research. She has directed numerous research projects funded by the ESRC, AHRC and the British Academy. She is the outgoing president of the European Second Language Association (EuroSLA) and co-author of the best-seller Second Language Learning Theories, now in its 3rd edition.

Florence is Director of the Centre for Research in Language Development throughout the Lifespan (LaDeLi). The centre hosts a team of internationally renowned researchers based at the University of Essex specialising in language development and loss from infancy to old age.

Recently, Florence has been involved in a pilot study investigating foreign language learning in the multilingual classroom.

An electronic database of both French learner language oral corpora and Spanish learner language oral corpora

An ESRC-funded investigation into the role of age in instructed SLA of French.
