The tenth Essex Language Conference for Teachers will be held on Tuesday the 2nd of July, 9am to 4pm, at the University of Essex, Colchester Campus, North Teaching Centre. It promises a varied and interesting selection of talks and practical workshops including accents and identity, African languages, signed languages, re-learning a childhood language, and the “White Paper: Primary languages policy in England – the way forward”. There will be plenty of opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas. Attendance is free including refreshments, but booking essential for planning and catering. Programme.
The BAAL Linguistics and Knowledge about Language in Education (LKALE) Special Interest Group will be held on Friday July 5th, at St. Anne’s College, University of Oxford, hosted by the Applied Linguistics Research Group, Department of Education, University of Oxford. The theme this year will be ‘Developing Reading’.
You are warmly invited to the following EAL Conference: “Enhancing EAL support: opportunities and best practice”, to be held at the University of Leeds on Saturday 6th of July 2019, 09:00-17:15.
This conference brings together practitioners and researchers to explore ways of enhancing the support of EAL children. The main themes are:
- The Home Language as a source of transferable language competence
- The use of drama and poetry to enhance language and confidence in EAL pupils
- Barriers and opportunities to share and enhance best practice
Ample time for discussion and exchanges has been built into the schedule to make the event as interactive as possible and enable the co-creation of an agenda for future collaboration between practitioners and researchers.

You can also join workshops led by SUPL teachers exploring FL literacy practice: phonics, graded readers, authentic texts and writing. All attendees are offered free access to an online French and Spanish resources bank. Lunch and afternoon tea are included. Numbers limited.
